But one is a mild astringent you can keep on the bathroom shelf, and the other is a controlled chemical burn a professional applies with a steady hand. The short version

Styptic powder — the alum-based kind — works by astringency. It contracts the tissue and the tiny vessels at a wound's surface and helps blood proteins knit into a plug. It does not destroy tissue. It is safe for everyday, unsupervised use on minor nicks and quicked nails.

Silver nitrate works by cautery. It is caustic: on contact with moist tissue it chemically coagulates and kills a thin layer of cells, sealing the vessel by destroying it rather than tightening it. How styptic powder actually works

Traditional styptic powder for shaving and grooming is potassium alum — the same mineral behind the barber's alum block, and the single ingredient in our tin. When you press it onto a bleeding nick, two things happen. The alum draws water out of the exposed tissue and makes the small vessels at the surface constrict, narrowing the openings blood is escaping from. At the same time it precipitates proteins, giving the forming clot a scaffold to grab onto. The result is a fast seal that stops surface bleeding without harming the skin underneath. Alum's whole appeal is that it is gentle enough to be forgiving. Silver nitrate usually shows up as a stick: a wooden applicator tipped with silver nitrate fused with potassium nitrate. It denatures proteins and destroys a shallow layer of cells on contact — a small, deliberate chemical burn that cauterizes the open vessel shut.

The trade-off is baked into the chemistry. Most nail bleeds never need anything stronger, and the same powder does the job at home.

Silver nitrate comes out for the harder cases: a nail that keeps bleeding despite correct pressure and powder, bleeding after a dewclaw removal, or excess granulation tissue (sometimes called proud flesh) that needs to be burned back.
